The system was only capable of offering a transfer rate of 283 kilobytes per minute had been developed. The first hard disk drive (HDD) came in 1976 from a joint project of IBM, Remington Rand, and NCR, an acronym for "National Cash Register". The System/42 was a 486-based minicomputer with the System/34 peripherals. The IBM System/34 was the first IBM personal computer. The first DB2 database product shipped was the IBM System/41 in 1971 (the first commercially available database). The hardware generator for 704s chips was announced by IBM in September 1969, and was shipped in October 1969. The world's first source PRNG for disk storage, a 64-bit integer generator for the 704, was available by October 1969. Singer began selling the 801 Workstation to customers in the fall of 1969. Several of the world's first work stations were sold with 704 disk storage PRNGs: the IBM 700/7000 server donated to Santa Clara University by IBM and the Singer 801 workstation donated to the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) by IBM in earnest on February 21, 1969. ![]() At the time the drive contained the world's first bank coder which was unveiled at the Fall 1968 Data Communications Seminar in Santa Clara, California.
